How Did It Get The Name Tummy Tuck?

In medicine, cosmetic surgery is a relatively recent development that didn’t really get popular until after the second half of the twentieth century. Some of the procedures, however, will date back as much as 4,000 years. The first plastic surgery is credited to India, though the practice eventually spread west. Once the procedures made it to Greece, the Greeks would name them after “plastikos”, mean mold or shape. The tummy tuck, or the abdominoplasty, is one of the newest cosmetic surgeries and translates as “to mold or shape the abdomen.”
The first tummy tuck took place in France in 1890. At the time, the tummy tuck was called a dermolipectomy, which means to surgically suck out skin. This procedure was used mainly for patients who had large umbilical hernias which caused unsightly bulging around the belly button and could only be corrected with surgery. The primitive tummy tuck worked by removing the problem under the skin as well as the large skin flap caused by the hernia and surgically attaching the remaining skin. Aside from correcting the hernia, doctors and patients noticed that removing extra skin tightened the midsection and created the appearance of a more toned stomach.
This led to surgeons performing tummy tucks more often, though there would be a slight issue: the incisions used by the doctors would also move the belly button. Tummy tucks are done by cutting a large cut in the lower pelvic region, removing extra fat and then tucking the extra skin under and suturing it closed (or stapling it). The first successful tummy tuck with a navel attached was also done in France by Dr. Gaudet and Dr. Morestin. In 1909, the German surgeons would be the first doctors to successfully complete a tummy tuck without removing the navel in the first place.
Over the previous decade, the tummy tuck procedure has seen significant advances. Though it was started to cure medical problem, it is currently used to correct excess abdominal skin which was caused by heavy weight loss or gain.
