Rebelious Aging
Jewels of Life: Rhodochrosite
Rhodochrosite is a delicate banded stone of pink, yellow and orange and gets its color from manganese and carbonic acid. Rhodochrosite is Greek for “rose colored” and is sometimes known as raspberry spar. Rhodochrosite bridges the fire and creativity of the lower chakras with the emotions of the heart chakra. It encourages activity, liveliness, and spontaneous expression of feelings. It helps us to have a positive, enthusiastic outlook on life. Rhodochrosite’s frequencies resonate with our inner child and assists in healing from childhood traumas. The child within uses lower chakra energy for unlimited creativity and happy, joyous manifestation and the heart chakra to live with heart. Rhodochrosite encourages exploration through the physical world with curiosity and wonder. It stimulates the circulatory system. Rhodochrosite is known as the stone of “love and balance”
Jewels of the Month:
The past few years, when my birthday has come along, the thought of aging has crossed my mind. I think of Senior citizen discounts coming my way, retirement which has a stigma that you retire and die in 2 years, and the thought of rocking in the chair on the front porch. I’m just kidding, but these are some of the models that have been passed to us in society.
I’d like to share some facts with you about aging.
* Aging is a progressive and very predictable process in which gradual changes occur over time.
* The aging process involves the steady decline of organ functioning and the regulation of body systems.
* Some declines in our body metabolism occur with aging.
* Our skin cells change and cause a loss of elasticity, which promotes wrinkles.
* Muscle mass may decline progressively after the age of 40.
* Atrophy of the brain is generally moderate in most healthy older people.
* Objects get fuzzy, changes in hearing occur and sense of smell declines rapidly After age 40
Those are facts that science has discovered.
Perhaps these are reasons why there is fear around aging and why anti-aging products are so popular and profitable. I know that as my age has crept into the fifties, I have been experiencing some fear too.
I always told myself that I would age gracefully. My thinking was that if I just let it flow and not buy into the hub bub that I would deflect it somehow, but its coming anyway so I need a new plan.
I decided to look up the definition of aging gracefully.
According to Webster’s dictionary aging is defined as: 1 : to become old : show the effects or the characteristics of increasing age
Grace has many definitions but the one that fit the best with aging is: 3 b : a pleasing appearance or effect : all the grace of youth
As I thought about aging gracefully and that it can be a pleasing effect to grow old, I have made a new decision because I don’t want to grow old, pleasing or not. .
Am I going to age gracefully? Hell No! I’m rebelling. I going to fight it every step of the way or at least fight the model that has been set before us in past generations. Now I’m not going to lie and say I’m 29 again when someone inquires about my age. I wouldn’t want to be 29 again. That was one of the most challenging years of my life and I don’t want to re-live that. I got married at 29, adjusting to being a couple sharing the same residence rather than just dating. We purchased our first home at 29 and then my husband was laid off his job before we even made the first house payment. When I was 29, both of my grandfathers passed away within three weeks of each other and at the same time we learned that my father-in-law was dying and then he passed away on my 30th birthday. Twenty-nine again, No Thanks!
I intend to be honest about my age, I have no shame there but at the same time I want to retain my youthful attitude and appearance as long as I can. I want to play and have childlike fun. I want to rollerblade with my kids. Then I want to rollerblade with my grandkids and be the rollerblading grandma. I want to run barefoot through the grass with the wind blowing my hair back even when I’m 90 as the free spirited person that I am now. Well what can we do to rebel and create a new model of healthy active aging, in other words, being fully engaged in life?
As a Whole-life Success Expert I would like to impart some of my wisdom with you to help you age in a healthy fashion.
* You got to move your body! If there were a magical formula for healthy aging, exercise would be it. When you are physically energized and fit, it positively affects every other area of your life. Find an activity that you enjoy and stick with it however, don’t feel limited to just that. Be adventurous in your approach to physical exercise.
* Do as your mama told you. Eat your veggies! Eat your fruit too. Nine servings a day of fruits and vegetables are the minimum. And your healthy fruit and veggies do not come from a can!
* Eat Fiber. Think Metamucil, regularity! Fiber removes toxins from the digestive tract and stabilizes blood sugar.
* Get your Zzzz’s. A minimum of 7 hours a night. The human growth hormone kicks in while we are asleep and repairs our cells and DNA.
* Use your mind. You are never too old to learn anything! Explore new things. Go back to school. Read lots of books. Explore a new hobby. Attend workshops and seminars.
* Keep a positive attitude and be grateful for all that you have in your life and all of the good that you deserve. If you don’t have it yet it is on its way.
If you feel sick, stuck or depressed, get help! We all need a little help sometimes.
Keep an active social life. Cultivate positive and growing relationships with family, friends and neighbors. Volunteer in your community. Be active in groups that contribute to your growth like Toastmasters.
Take time for yourself to do what you enjoy, whether that is a hobby, spending time in nature, meditating or watching a movie. If you enjoy it, do it.
I think as a baby boomer, my role is to boom out a new model for aging. Blast it from the rooftops; be a positive role model and live out loud when it comes to the healthy aging process.
What can you do in your own life to be a role model for healthy aging? I invite you to rebel with me and join the revolution.
