Remedies For Menopause Symptoms

Although menopause is a natural, harmless state of life, and some women skate through it with no symptoms at all, others end up with a symptoms list that can be difficult to battle. For these women, symptoms can range from “uncomfortable” to “making-life-miserable.”

But there’s no need to put up with raging symptoms hopelessly.

Here are some practical remedies for the most persistent menopause symptoms:

Hot flashes

Hot flashes vary quite a bit from woman to woman – in length, severity and duration. Hot flashes can arrive in the morning, noon or night; some women experience them for only minutes while others feel them for the better part of an hour; and some women continue to get hot flashes for years, while others experience them for a couple of months.

To get rid of them:

  • Hormone replacement therapy. Although controversial, and some physicians don’t recommend it, other physicians say this is the most effective way to get rid of hot flashes. You’ll have to discuss with your doctor the pros and cons and decide if it’s right for you.
  • Natural remedies: Deep breathing, yoga and meditation work for many women.
  • Herbs: Black cohosh and soy are the herbs of choice for many women who say they work.

Incontinence

As if the hot flashes aren’t enough, menopause can bring on an increase in incontinence, too. Fading levels of estrogen thin the urethra lining, causing those little leaks.

To stop the leaking:

  • Lose weight. Yeah, it’s a tough one, but less weight will definitely reduce the pressure you’re putting on your bladder.
  • Do Kegels. These are exercises to strengthen the muscles that are used to stop urination when you need to. To strengthen, pretend you’re stopping a flow of urination, hold for a second, then release the muscle. Repeat several times daily to give them strength.
  • Avoid bladder irritants. Caffeine can irritate the bladder — so can citrus fruits and spicy foods.
  • Surgery. In severe cases, surgery is available.
