How does one know if you have normal vaginal discharge? Every woman’s vagina produces some amount of discharge. Each girl is dissimilar so what sort of discharge is ordinary for them might be abnormal for someone else. Usually but there are one or two definite things you can go by to tell whether you have normal vaginal discharge.
Why do vagina’s produce discharge in the 1st place?
The aim of discharge is to wash away the old cells lining the vaginal wall. Glands in your vagina and cervix produce the tiny quantity of fluids that flows out of your body. Normal vaginal discharge also helps with lubricating during sexual intercourse. It doesn't often have a noticeable odour. When it gets on your undies, it often looks clear or milky white. It’s not uncommon to have vaginal discharge that looks a tiny bit like egg whites during ovulation.
What things can change discharge?
There are plenty of things that may cause changes in your normal discharge. The general rule is that anything causing changes to your hormones or menstruation cycle may also cause changes to your discharge. This includes pregnancy, stress, ovulation, breastfeeding, and contraception. Other items which can upset the balance of the vagina and change your normal vaginal discharge are douches, antibiotics, infections, and female hygiene products containing smells and dyes.
When is discharge not normal?
Any sudden change in vaginal discharge could be a sign of an issue. The most typical changes in normal vaginal discharge are changes in color, odour, or consistency. These changes in particular can point to a vaginal infection. Color may become whiter than normal, or take on a yellowish or greenish tint. Discharge odor related to illnesses generally smells fishy or yeasty. As for consistency, this will range all the way from thinner discharge to a thicker, bigger quantity of discharge.
When should I see a physician?
It's crucial to consult a medical practitioner as fast as you spot any changes in discharge. Vaginal contagions are common so if your discharge seems smellier or a different color than normal, it’s likely you have an infection. You'll want to treat an infection immediately, so you must go to a doctor to get the medication, or approval for a home-based treatment plan. Don’t try and self-diagnose and use an over-the-counter treatment, because you could finish up treating something pointlessly and ignoring the most important problem.
